PADHOW VS GRAMMARLY
Padhow is a better fit for deliberate selected-text edits with local or chosen cloud models, plus Mac utilities. Grammarly is a better fit for ongoing writing suggestions and dedicated writing checks.
Documentation reviewed 18 September 2026 · Written by Padhow’s maker · We have not benchmarked grammar accuracy.

Grammarly provides suggestions inside supported editors and browsers, tone feedback, and paid plagiarism/citation features. Padhow does not replace that full checking system.
| Task | Padhow | Grammarly |
|---|---|---|
| Grammar and rewrites | Run an action on selected text, review and replace | Writing suggestions inside supported apps and browsers; paid advanced rewrites |
| Choose the AI model | Apple Intelligence, Ollama and supported cloud API keys | Managed writing service; no consumer model-provider selection documented in the reviewed plans |
| Local processing option | Local dictation and optional local writing models; cloud requests only when you choose a cloud provider | Reviewed pages do not offer the same selectable Apple/Ollama local-model workflow |
| Plagiarism and citations | No dedicated plagiarism database or citation-checking workflow | Plagiarism detection and citation consistency in paid plans |
| Team writing rules | Personal prompts and preferences | Plan-dependent style guides, brand tones and organizational controls |
| Everyday Mac tools | App/file search, clipboard history, local speech, notes and calculator | Writing-focused product; no app/file launcher or clipboard-history manager listed in these sources |
| Availability and cost | Apple Silicon Mac; €12 app price once, cloud fees separate | Free writing tier and paid plans; desktop, browser and mobile offerings |
Launch apps, preview local files and recover copied text, images and files. Grammarly’s writing integrations do not serve as those launcher tools.
Download a speech model, dictate into supported fields and retain a local transcript. Use Apple Intelligence or Ollama for text work where available, rather than depending on one managed writing service.
Continuous in-editor suggestions, dedicated plagiarism and citation checks, and centrally managed writing rules are gaps. Grammarly also supports more platforms. Padhow’s rewrite quality depends on the chosen model; a custom prompt is not proof of equal grammar coverage.
In-editor checking, source-backed citation/similarity tools, shared style rules and additional platforms are backlog work. Grammarly’s “BYOK” encryption option is enterprise key management, not the same thing as bringing an AI provider key to Padhow.
We compare documented capabilities, not vendor accuracy claims. “Local” describes the selected processing route, not every Padhow feature: cloud AI and web previews still use the network.
