Keep Spotlight if built-in search and system actions cover your day.
Consider Padhow if you also want to rewrite selected text with your
chosen model, browse websites inside the launcher, and use
configurable utilities alongside your results.
What Apple Spotlight already does well
Spotlight comes with macOS. It finds apps and files, answers
calculations and conversions, and offers system-integrated actions. On
recent macOS versions, it also provides clipboard history and quick
keys. Those are real capabilities, not reasons to dismiss the built-in
tool.
Apple documents
Spotlight’s keyboard shortcuts and actions
and
clipboard history. Availability varies with the macOS version. Apple Intelligence
Writing Tools and Shortcuts can add writing workflows, but they should
not be confused with a dedicated multi-provider chat interface in
Spotlight.
Where Padhow takes a different approach
Search with boundaries
Normal local results default to apps. Choose which file types to
include, set search folders, and exclude private or noisy
directories. Type open brand or
find brand for explicit file search. Empty scope
means no file search, not a whole-computer fallback.
Writing in the same flow
Select a sentence in another app, open Padhow and choose a
correction or translation. Review the result before inserting it.
Or type a question directly and continue with follow-ups. Bring
your own supported AI provider or use a compatible local model.
Look before you launch
Preview images, video, PDF, Markdown and highlighted code
alongside file results. A website address can open an interactive
web preview, with locally stored cookies and an optional
ad/tracker blocker. Website compatibility varies.
Tools you can switch off
Clipboard history, snippets, quicklinks, local notes, media
controls, alarms and usage graphs are configurable. Gmail and
Google Calendar integrations are also implemented, but still
require OAuth setup and live-account validation before public
launch.
Can Padhow use Command–Space?
Padhow offers configurable shortcuts, including Command–Space. If
macOS or another launcher already uses the shortcut, change that
assignment so the two apps do not compete. You can also keep a
separate shortcut and use both launchers.
Is it a replacement for Alfred or Raycast too?
There is overlap in app search, clipboard utilities and quick
commands. Alfred has an established workflow system; Raycast has its
own extension ecosystem and AI features. Padhow’s proposition is its
particular combination of tools and planned one-time app price. It
does not promise to run every Alfred workflow or Raycast extension.
